Hitch ball mounts come in a variety of drop and rises to ensure the
proper towing height. Setting the hitch ball at the correct height
for the trailer coupler is important to driver control while towing.
The following is a reliable method for selecting the correct ball
mount.
For safe,
comfortable towing,
the trailer should always be set
up to tow on a level plane
Tow Vehicle and trailer level
Trailer
Not Level
Sometimes a trailer's tongue
is
higher or lower than the ball mount
on the vehicle, and a ball mount
with a "rise" or a "drop" is required
to level the trailer
Measuring For
The Proper Ball Mount
1. Measure from the
ground to the top
of the hitch.
2. Measure from the
ground to the (inside)
top of the trailer
coupler, when level
3.
Subtract the height of the
hitch ball (most are 2-1/2" - 3" high)
from coupler measurement.
4. An
8" drop is needed to make the trailer level.
THE
DIFFERENCE IN THE TWO
MEASUREMENTS IS THE AMOUNT
OF BALL MOUNT "RISE" OR "DROP"
REQUIRED.
